By Car: Montage Laguna Beach is about 1.5 hours from LA (traffic-dependent) and roughly 90 minutes from San Diego, right along scenic PCH.
By Plane: the closest airport is John Wayne Airport (SNA), about 16 miles / 25 minutes away. The resort doesn't run a free airport shuttle, but the Concierge can book a car through a preferred vendor. LAX is also an option for international flights (1.5–2 hours with traffic).

Real talk

It was October in LA, the weather was finally cooling down and my husband, toddler, and I wanted to sneak in one quick getaway before the final end-of-year push. The Ritz-Carlton was the first listing that popped up when I searched "family-friendly luxury resort" in Orange County. Even though it rained two out of our three days, we left feeling pampered and rejuvenated, thanks to the hospitality and top-notch service at the Ritz.

Getting around

Shuttles: The resort doesn't run an airport shuttle, but it does offer a complimentary beach shuttle during peak season for guests who'd rather skip the uphill walk back from Salt Creek Beach. There are also free public trolleys in summer connecting Dana Point, Laguna Niguel, and Laguna Beach, which some families use to explore nearby towns without moving the car.

Beach Access: The hotel is not beachfront but it is within walking distance via a paved path.The path and beach area (restrooms, snack bar, grassy lawn) are stroller-friendly though the walk back up is a real incline (heads up if you have a loaded stroller or carrying a toddler).

Accessibility: Ritz-Carlton properties are designed to meet accessibility standards, and mobility-accessible rooms with roll-in showers are available on request; ask about accessible routes to the beach specifically, since the bluff path has some grade.

Distance to Downtown: Downtown Dana Point and Dana Point Harbor are about a 5–6 minute drive. Downtown Laguna Beach is roughly 15–20 minutes north on PCH.

Stroller / Car Seat Rentals: The resort doesn't formally advertise stroller or car seat rentals — bring your own or arrange one through a local baby-gear rental service and have it delivered, which many families with infants do for SoCal trips.

Eco-Adventure Center runs family-friendly excursions lessons, paddleboarding, kayaking, seasonal whale watching, e-bike tours, and beach scavenger hunts and indoor toys & activities for toddlers and young as 2.

Babysitting: The resort doesn't run in-house babysitting, but parents are given a list of vetted local childcare providers to book directly for evenings out.

Other Services & Activities: Children's Night Out (evening drop-off sessions) and Sunset S'mores are regular offerings, alongside seasonal touches. Turndown s'mores kits and small welcome surprises for kids' birthdays can be arranged in advance with the concierge.

Pet friendly

Yes! Up to two pets of any size are welcome in designated rooms for $350 per pet, per stay. Club Level rooms are not pet-friendly.A grassy pet relief area is available on property.

Heads Up:

Kitchen: No in-room kitchens or kitchenettes this is a traditional resort, not an extended-stay or condo-style property, so don't expect to prep baby food or store groceries in-room beyond the mini-fridge.

Overall

This is an exceptional hotel for families with young kids who want a relaxing beach vacation without sacrificing taste. The Eco-Adventure Center and Ritz Kids program give kids real, hands-on things to do rather than a glorified daycare. The pools and lawn areas give younger ones room to run. The trade-offs are the ones you'd expect at this price point: the beach requires a walk down (and back up), the valet-only parking adds a real daily cost on top of the room rate, breakfast isn't included unless you book a package or Club Level, and there's no in-room kitchen for families trying to keep snacks and bottles on hand. If your family can stomach the price tag, it's one of the more thoughtfully kid-friendly five-star resorts in Southern California, especially good for a a milestone treat, multi-generational stay in connecting rooms, or pairing with a Disneyland or Legoland.
