Overview

W Sydney is the anchor hotel of "The Ribbon," the wave-shaped tower that opened at Darling Harbour in 2023 and is now the largest W Hotel in the world, with 588 rooms. It sits right on the water, a short walk from Sydney's CBD, and is one of the most striking buildings on the harbour.

My entire adult life unfolded in the heart of the Sydney CBD; university days, work years, and all those messy nights out in between. I knew it like the back of my hand and always knew where to get the best hot chips, best cocktail and best unpaid parking.

Now my husband and I come back with a little one, who's getting his first taste of the city where his parents grew up. Exploring Sydney with a kiddo is a whole new adventure. This city is a toddler's playground and I'm proud to say it's one of the most family-friendly cities I know. On our latest visit, we decided to become tourists in our own backyard. We planted ourselves right in the center of Sydney and set out to explore all those spots that out-of-towners are always raving about

Getting Here
By car: The hotel is at 31 Wheat Road, Darling Harbour, right in the CBD fringe. Expect city traffic and tight, limited on-site parking (see Parking section).
By airplane: Sydney Airport (SYD) is roughly 5–14 km away depending on which source you check (domestic vs. international terminal), which typically translates to a 15–25 minute drive outside peak hours, longer at rush hour. There's no direct rail link from the airport to the hotel's door, so most families use a taxi/rideshare or the Airport Link train to Central Station, then a short cab or light rail ride.
By train or other transit: This is where the hotel earns its keep for families without a car. It's about a 10-minute walk to Town Hall Station, and Museum Station and the Inner West Light Rail (Exhibition/Convention/Pyrmont Bay stops) are all within easy walking distance, handy if you're wrangling a stroller and don't want a long walk with tired kids.

There is something for everyone in Darling Harbour from Sydney Aquarium, Chinese Garden and playgrounds for the kids, to top-quality food & drink for the parents (with killer water views). It's less suited to families who want a quiet, laid-back resort vibe, a dedicated kids' program, or easy beach access. Big groups can work well here given the room count and connecting-room options, but this leans more "cool city stay" than "family resort."

Getting around

Shuttles: No dedicated hotel shuttle. You're relying on rideshare/taxi, light rail, or walking.

Trains & Ferries: This is one of the strongest arguments for staying here with kids. Town Hall Station (major train interchange) is about a 10-minute walk, and Museum Station is even closer, both put you on Sydney's train network within minutes, no transfers needed for most CBD/harbour attractions.

The Inner West Light Rail runs right through Darling Harbour itself, with stops at Exhibition, Convention, and Pyrmont Bay — genuinely useful for tired kids and strollers since you can hop on right at the harbour rather than trekking to a train station. For a proper "wow" moment with the kids, ferries are an easy, scenic option too:
King Street Wharf (a short walk from the hotel) and the Barangaroo and Pyrmont Bay wharves connect you directly to Circular Quay, the Opera House, and Taronga Zoo (a ferry ride is often more fun for young kids than a train, and it skips road traffic entirely). Between light rail, trains, and ferries, you can reach almost all the family-friendly sites without ever needing to book a car.

Accessibility: The hotel offers wheelchair-accessible rooms and facilities; smooth flooring is noted in guestrooms, which is also a plus for stroller-rolling parents.

Distance to CBD: About 1–1.4 km (roughly a 10-minute walk) to Pitt Street Mall and the heart of the CBD.

On-site restaurants: The Living Room (all-day dining/bar) and 29/30 rooftop bar are the main venues, alongside 2am: dessertbar by Janice Wong. These lean toward a stylish, adult social scene rather than casual family dining. If you would like something low-key you can grab room service or venture down to Darling Harbour for plenty of family-friendly restaurants.

Laundry: Standard hotel laundry/dry-cleaning service is available (as at most Marriott properties); no self-service laundromat on-site.

Room Amenities Parents Look For

Family-Friendly Rooms: Rooms run from around 700–818 sq ft with two king or twin bed configurations, dining/sitting areas, and connecting room options for bigger families. No dedicated "kids suite" concept, but the room sizes are generous.

Wifi: Free wifi, reported at 50+ Mbps, plus wired internet — reliable for parents needing to work or stream cartoons.

Kitchenette: Certain suites have small kitchenettes with a dishwasher, cutlery, fridge and stoves. Confirm upon booking if this is what you require for your family. All rooms have a minibar, espresso maker, and electric kettle, plus 24-hour room service.

Onsite Parking: Very limited. Multiple recent guest reviews describe parking as tight, and recommend pre-booking valet well ahead of arrival (it's easy to miss in the booking confirmation fine print) or simply using rideshare instead.

Overnight guests: Valet parking is available but limited and should be booked in advance; rates are reported in the AUD $65–100+ per night range depending on source and season. Make sure you confirm current pricing directly with the hotel.

Day guests (no validation): Not really practical on-site given space constraints; nearby public car parks (e.g., Darling Quarter, Harbourside, Darling Park) are the better bet.

Electric Chargers: EV charging is available on-site, subject to availability (limited stations). You’ll need to confirm when booking if you need this.

Activities & Services for Kids

Darling Harbour: although The W Sydney does not run a dedicated children's club or supervised activity program, Darling Harbor is an extremely family friendly as it is very close to the Aquarium, Chinese Friendship Garden, playgrounds, outdoor water-play areas, ice-cream shops and open spaces to keep your Mini entertained.

Pet friendly

Yes. W Sydney allows up to 2 dogs of any size for an additional AU$200 per night; cats may be considered by request. Good to know if you're travelling with the family dog, and also useful context if your kids have pet allergies and you'd rather book a pet-free stay elsewhere.

Heads Up:

Stroller/Car seat rentals: Not offered by the hotel. Bring your own or arrange rental through a third-party baby-gear rental service in Sydney ahead of arrival.

Temperature: some rooms run warm and can be hard to cool down overnight, which is worth knowing if you have a child who sleeps poorly when hot.

W Sydney is a well-located hotel that families will enjoy as long as you go in with the right expectations. The two pools, harbour views, spacious rooms, free cribs, blackout curtains, and unbeatable walkable location near Darling Harbour's kid-friendly attractions all work strongly in its favour, especially for families without a car who want to be close to the action.

Where it falls short of a true "family hotel" is in dedicated programming: there's no kids' club, no confirmed babysitting service, no kids' menu spelled out, and no stroller/car-seat rental. The vibe is more of a "stylish urban escape" than "family resort." Parking is also a genuine headache; book valet in advance or plan on rideshare.

Bottom line: it’s great choice for families with older kids or tweens who'll enjoy the design, the pools, and the location, and who don't need built-in kid programming. You also don't need a car here: trains, light rail, and ferries put almost every major Sydney family attraction within easy reach, which takes a lot of stress out of travelling with kids.

Families with toddlers/infants who want turnkey family services (kids' club, babysitting, stroller rental) may be happier at a more traditionally family-oriented Sydney property, and can use this one primarily for its unbeatable transport-free location and pool.
