Sydney

Australia

Overview

Sydney is one of the most family-friendly cities in the world, packing beaches, wildlife, and world-class attractions into a compact, easy-to-navigate harbor city. Families can spend a morning watching koalas and kangaroos at Taronga Zoo (with harbor views as a bonus), splash around at Bondi or Manly Beach, and explore the interactive exhibits at the Australian National Maritime Museum or SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. Sydney is a walkable city which is great for wiggly kids. English is the local language, public transport is reliable, and the laid-back, outdoorsy culture means there's rarely a shortage of parks, playgrounds, and picnic spots to burn off extra energy.

Hotels we love:

The best times for families to visit Sydney are during Australia's spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May), when temperatures are mild and comfortable for long days of sightseeing without the intense summer heat or crowds. February is Sydney's summer, amazing for beach time but also peak tourist season with higher prices and bigger crowds, especially around the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Winter (June to August) is cooler and quieter, with fewer crowds and lower prices, making it a good budget-friendly option, though it's less ideal for beach days. For a good balance of pleasant weather, manageable crowds, and reasonable costs, shoulder seasons (spring and autumn) tend to be the sweet spot for family travel.
